Hima: Saudi Arabia’s Ancient Rock Art Treasure Joins UNESCO World Heritage List

A Journey Through Time: Hima’s Rich Cultural Legacy

In a significant milestone for Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage, the rock art site of Hima in Najran has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This recognition marks Hima as the sixth Saudi site to receive this prestigious status, highlighting its exceptional universal value.

A Crossroads of Civilizations

Nestled in southwestern Saudi Arabia, Hima boasts one of the world’s largest and most diverse rock art complexes. For millennia, this site served as a crucial conduit for caravans traveling along the Hajj and trade routes, connecting southern Arabia with the ancient markets of Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Egypt.

A Canvas of Human History

The rock faces of Hima tell a story spanning prehistoric to post-historic times. Visitors can marvel at:

  • Intricate depictions of hunting scenes
  • Diverse wildlife and plant life
  • Ancient symbols and tools
  • Thousands of inscriptions in various scripts, including Musnad, Thamudic, Nabataean, and early Arabic

Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future

Dr. Jasir Alherbish, CEO of the Heritage Commission, emphasized Hima’s global significance: “This region provides us with numerous lessons regarding the evolution of human civilization and life in ancient times.”

The commission is actively working to:

  • Preserve the site
  • Conduct further research on the rock inscriptions
  • Welcome more local and international visitors

A Vision for Cultural Heritage

Hima’s recognition aligns perfectly with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, which prioritizes the preservation and protection of the Kingdom’s cultural and natural ᴀssets. Recent archaeological discoveries have reinforced Saudi Arabia’s status as a prime destination for researchers interested in regional human history.

International Cooperation for Global Heritage

In 2019, Saudi Arabia demonstrated its commitment to cultural preservation on a global scale by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with UNESCO. This agreement included a $25 million donation to support UNESCO’s worldwide heritage protection initiatives.

As Hima takes its rightful place on the world stage, it invites us all to explore the rich tapestry of human history etched into its ancient rocks.
