Bucs star compares being teammates with Tom Brady to looking after his mom

Tampa Bay offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs has poked fun at Tom Brady by comparing the legendary quarterback to his mother.

The 26-year-old was drafted by the Buccaneers back in 2020 – two decades after Brady joined the league, but the same season the quarterback moved to Tampa Bay.

Wirfs is 21 years younger than Brady and his task after joining the NFL was to protect the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

Brady was 42 by the time he joined the Buccaneers and, during a recent discussion on ‘Calm Down with Erin and Charissa’, Wirf recalled the instructions he was given.

‘Tom was my QB. They were like: “Don’t let anybody touch him,” and I was like, “Alright, I’ll try my best” — he’s fragile, he’s old. Not that old, not that old!’ Wirfs said.

The offensive tackle then pointed out that the retired quarterback is old enough to be his father. ‘He’s like two years younger than my mom!,’ Wirfs added. ‘Sorry, sorry, sorry!’

The offensive tackle answered the call, however, ensuring Brady was sacked only 21 times during the 2020 regular season – 22 other quarterbacks were hit more.

Brady rewarded the Buccaneers with the Vince Lombardi Trophy, leading Tampa Bay to victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at Super Bowl LV.

He joined the Bucs after leaving the Patriots and Brady recently revealed that ‘tension’ between him and coach Bill Belichick led to his departure.

The pair spent 20 seasons together and won six Super Bowls in New England, where Belichick established a strict culture known as ‘The Patriot Way.’

But Brady revealed in his newsletter: ‘After twenty years together, a natural tension had developed between where Coach Belichick and I were headed in our careers, and where the Patriots were moving as a franchise.’

He added: ‘It was the kind of tension that could only be resolved by some kind of split or one of us reᴀssessing our priorities.’
