BREAKING NEWSESPN to release behind-the-scenes Chiefs documentary made by the same team as 'The Last Dance'

ESPN has announced it is developing a new behind-the-scenes documentary series focusing on the Kansas City Chiefs.

The network revealed the series will be produced by ‘much of the team’ behind the smash-hit Michael Jordan and Chicago Bulls documentary ‘The Last Dance’.

The crew was given extensive access to Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes and their teammates during the 2024 NFL season, when they were trying to make NFL history with a third successive Super Bowl win.

However, the year ended in heartbreak for Kansas City after a crushing 40-22 Super Bowl defeat by the Philadelphia Eagles in New Orleans.

The six-episode docuseries is expected to premiere later this year on both ESPN and Disney+.

An ESPN release said the series will detail ‘the Chiefs’ journey as they completed a franchise-record 15-win regular season, captured a third-consecutive AFC тιтle, and made a third-straight Super Bowl appearance.’

Last season continued almost a decade of Chiefs dominance in the NFL before they came up against the Eagles.

In the last decade the Chiefs have made the playoffs every year, won the AFC West Division тιтle nine times, appeared in the AFC Championship Game seven years in a row and made five Super Bowl appearances in six years, winning three.

‘ESPN and Disney+ know that sports fans are interested in stories that take them beyond the X’s and O’s, and this series will explore the legacy of the Chiefs franchise while also showcasing the emotional highs and lows of building a championship-winning team,’ said Burke Magnus, president of content, ESPN.

‘From the brilliance of Patrick Mahomes to the leadership of Andy Reid and the pᴀssion of Chiefs Kingdom, this project will showcase the drama, intensity, and heart that make this team a global phenomenon.’

It remains to be seen how much Taylor Swift is featured, given she was once again a regular presence at boyfriend Kelce’s games.

The series will also spotlight the 65-year history of the franchise dating back to its earliest days in Dallas, Texas, when the team was founded by Lamar Hunt.

It also promises viewers ‘exclusive access to the organization’s extensive and rarely seen pH๏τo and video archives’, as well as ‘intimate interviews with players, coaches, and other key figures’.

Sports fans have got every reason to be excited thanks to the team’s previous work on ‘The Last Dance’.

The docu-series told the story of Jordan’s iconic NBA career with a focus on his final season with the Bulls, in 1997-98.

It aired on ESPN from April to May in 2020, at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, before being released on Netflix in July 2020.

The show was met with huge viewing figures and critical acclaim, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
