The Giants’ quarterback bottom line after making the most of paltry market

The Giants’ quarterback bottom line after making the most of paltry market

It is not always possible to enact the dramatic upgrades that make everyone go “ooh’’ and “ahh’’ and conjure up accolades that lead to high grades at this juncture of the offseason. Sometimes, it pans out where a team can look at a specific area and say with certainty, “We got a lot better there.”

There is no doubt the Giants now are better at quarterback than they were last season. Before you start with “they couldn’t get much worse,” let us beat you to the punch. Yes, the performances at quarterback in 2024 were pathetic, and settling for slight improvement on that dreck is not going to cut it.

Sure, a leap forward would have been nice, but the Giants were not exactly holding a winning hand with the quarterback scenarios out there for them. They now have Russell Wilson as their starter and Jameis Winston as their backup. Last season, they had Daniel Jones and Drew Lock. What they have now is better. How much better remains to be seen. But definitely better. And better was pretty much all they could muster, given the insufficient supply available to fill their demand.

Here is one way to look at it: The Giants’ top two quarterbacks are under contract in 2025 for $14.5 million. The Colts signed Daniel Jones for one year and $14 million. Two is better than one, and Wilson should be able to handle the offense with more aplomb than Jones ever did. Is there a chance Wilson is sH๏τ? His play degenerated down the stretch in 2024 as the Steelers lost five consecutive games. The Giants hope the muscle memory in Wilson’s still-sturdy body will allow him to operate at a high enough level to give his new team a chance to win more often than not.
