Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), directed by Christopher McQuarrie, is an exhilarating and masterfully crafted action thriller that delivers everything fans have come to expect from the Mission: Impossible franchise—high stakes, breathtaking action, intricate plotting, and a deep sense of personal stakes. It’s a rare sequel that not only lives up to its predecessors but arguably surpᴀsses them, offering a thrilling ride that is both emotionally resonant and relentlessly entertaining.

The film picks up where Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) left off, as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and the Impossible Mission Force (IMF) team are faced with a new global threat. The Apostles, a shadowy terrorist group, are in possession of three stolen nuclear weapons and plan to use them to create global chaos. To prevent a catastrophic attack, Ethan and his team—comprising Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), and Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson)—must track down and secure the bombs before they can be detonated. However, things become complicated when Ethan is forced to make a morally difficult choice to protect a mission, resulting in the loss of the weapons to the Apostles.

As a result, Ethan’s actions attract the attention of August Walker (Henry Cavill), a CIA agent ᴀssigned to oversee the IMF’s operations and ensure the success of the mission. Walker is skeptical of Ethan’s methods and becomes a formidable presence throughout the film, leading to tensions and moments of betrayal within the team. With the stakes higher than ever, Ethan must balance his duty to the mission with the consequences of his past decisions and his desire to protect those he loves.

The plot of Fallout is intricate and full of twists, but at its heart, the film is about loyalty, trust, and sacrifice. Ethan Hunt is, as always, driven by a personal code of honor, but this time, he faces the weight of his choices more than ever before. The film explores the toll that being a spy takes on him—not only physically but emotionally—and touches on themes of redemption, responsibility, and the personal costs of saving the world.

Tom Cruise once again delivers a stellar performance, fully embodying the character of Ethan Hunt. His dedication to performing his own stunts is evident in Fallout, and the film showcases some of the most jaw-dropping action sequences of the entire series. From helicopter chases to rooftop leaps and bone-crushing fistfights, Cruise’s commitment to pushing his physical limits adds an authentic intensity to the film. The scenes of Ethan risking his life in increasingly dangerous situations are both exhilarating and suspenseful, creating a visceral experience for the audience.

The supporting cast also shines, particularly Henry Cavill as August Walker, who plays a CIA agent with his own agenda. Cavill’s imposing physicality and steely demeanor make Walker a formidable antagonist, while also adding a sense of moral ambiguity to the film. Rebecca Ferguson continues to impress as Ilsa Faust, a former MI6 agent with a complicated relationship with Ethan. Her character is one of the highlights of the series, offering both romantic tension and a sense of cool professionalism. Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames also return as the reliable IMF duo, Benji and Luther, providing humor, heart, and camaraderie amidst the tension.

The action sequences in Mission: Impossible – Fallout are some of the most ambitious and impressive ever put to film. Christopher McQuarrie, who also wrote the screenplay, brings a keen sense of pacing and structure, ensuring that each action set piece feels earned and integral to the story. The film opens with a high-octane sequence in which Ethan and his team steal the nuclear weapons in a daring and harrowing mission, setting the tone for the rest of the film. The standout sequence, however, is a breathtaking helicopter chase, in which Ethan pilots a helicopter in a heart-stopping pursuit that combines practical effects with jaw-dropping stunts.

Another key action sequence involves a brutal bathroom fight, which stands as one of the most intense and physically demanding scenes in the franchise. The hand-to-hand combat between Ethan and Walker is gritty and raw, showcasing the toll that these characters take on their bodies. The choreography of the fight, combined with тιԍнт editing and the palpable sense of urgency, makes it one of the standout moments of the film.

The film’s cinematography, by Rob Hardy, is stunning, capturing the grandeur of the action while also focusing on the emotional moments. From the striking Parisian backdrops to the rugged landscapes of New Zealand, the film’s visuals are both dynamic and atmospheric. The use of practical effects and real locations, coupled with smart camera work, makes the action sequences feel grounded and immersive.

Lorne Balfe’s score is another highlight, providing a pulse-pounding, tension-filled soundtrack that enhances the film’s high stakes. The music complements the action and suspense, while also weaving in themes from the previous films in the series, giving the movie a sense of continuity and emotional resonance.

One of the most impressive aspects of Mission: Impossible – Fallout is its ability to balance heart-pounding action with emotional depth. While the film certainly delivers on spectacle, it also provides moments of quiet reflection, particularly with Ethan’s internal struggle and his relationship with his team. The personal stakes feel real and add weight to the story, giving it more emotional resonance than simply a series of explosive action sequences.

The film concludes with a thrilling and satisfying resolution, while also leaving open the possibility for future adventures. The final moments emphasize the theme of loyalty and sacrifice, reminding the audience that even heroes like Ethan Hunt are human, vulnerable, and shaped by the choices they make.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout is not only a high-octane action thriller but also a masterclass in suspense, character development, and storytelling. It raises the bar for action films, delivering some of the most intense sequences ever filmed while also providing a thoughtful and emotional exploration of its characters. With its outstanding performances, breathtaking action, and compelling narrative, Fallout is a standout entry in the Mission: Impossible series and one of the best action films of the 21st century.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
