Review: Extinction (2015) – A Chilling Take on the Zombie Apocalypse

Directed by: Miguel Ángel Vivas
Starring: Matthew Fox, Jeffrey Donovan, Quinn McColgan, Clara Lago

Overview

Extinction (2015) is a post-apocalyptic horror-thriller that blends elements of survival drama with the unᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Unlike traditional zombie films filled with non-stop action, Extinction takes a more psychological and emotional approach, focusing on isolation, personal trauma, and human relationships in a frozen wasteland.

Plot Summary

After a ᴅᴇᴀᴅly infection wipes out most of humanity, former friends Patrick (Matthew Fox) and Jack (Jeffrey Donovan) find themselves surviving in an abandoned, snow-covered town with Jack’s young daughter, Lu (Quinn McColgan). The two men, once close, are now bitterly estranged due to a dark past event.

Believing the infected creatures to be long gone, they attempt to live a normal life. However, when the terrifying, mutated zombies resurface—faster and ᴅᴇᴀᴅlier than before—they must put aside their differences to protect Lu and fight for survival in an unforgiving world.

Strengths

Unique Setting – The film’s snowy, post-apocalyptic landscape adds a fresh and eerie twist to the zombie genre.
Strong Emotional Core – Rather than focusing solely on horror, the movie explores themes of loss, trauma, and redemption.
Solid Performances – Matthew Fox and Jeffrey Donovan deliver compelling portrayals of two broken men struggling to coexist.
Terrifying Creatures – The zombies are more evolved and faster than typical unᴅᴇᴀᴅ, making them even more menacing.

Weaknesses

Slow Pacing – The first half is heavily focused on character development, which may feel slow for those expecting constant action.
Limited Zombie Action – Unlike traditional zombie films, Extinction leans more towards drama than full-scale horror.
Predictable Story Arcs – Some character conflicts and resolutions are predictable, following familiar post-apocalyptic tropes.

Final Verdict

Extinction is not your typical zombie movie—it’s more of a slow-burn psychological survival thriller with horror elements. While it may not appeal to fans of action-packed unᴅᴇᴀᴅ films like World War Z, it offers an emotional and suspenseful story with strong performances. If you enjoy atmospheric horror and character-driven survival dramas, Extinction is worth a watch.
