Chiefs signing Gardner Minshew as Patrick Mahomes backup plan

Journeyman quarterback Gardner Minshew has found a landing spot for the 2025 season.

Minshew has agreed to a one-year deal with the Chiefs, according to multiple reports on Thursday.

He takes the place of Carson Wentz as Kansas City’s backup QB.

The former Jaguars sixth-round pick is on the fifth different team after being released by the Raiders on Wednesday after he signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the organization last offseason.

But Minshew, 28, had an unimpressive 2024 campaign after winning the starting job out of training camp and found himself benched multiple times during the year before a collarbone injury put a wrap on his season.

He threw for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 10 games for the Raiders, nine of which were starts.

The Mississippi native has played six seasons in the NFL with stops in Jacksonville, Philadelphia, Indianapolis and Las Vegas.

Minshew’s best season was in 2023, during which he threw for a career-best 3,305 yards when he started in 13 games and appeared in 17 for the Colts.

Barring an injury or if a game is out of hand, Minshew shouldn’t expect to see too much playing time in 2025 behind Patrick Mahomes.

Wentz started once and made three appearances in 2024, and the previous backup — Blaine Gabbert — started just once and made two appearances in 2023.
