Cowboys extremely quiet to start NFL free agency after Jerry Jones’ warning

Well, Jerry Jones did warn Cowboys fans.

Dallas has been extremely quiet in free agency, having made just a handful of signings and shopping around the bargain bin.

The Cowboys reportedly brought in running back Javonte Williams on a modest one-year deal worth up to $3.5 million, added former Jets defensive tackle Solomon Thomas on a two-year deal worth up to $8 million and also signed guard Robert Jones to a one-year deal worth up to $4.75 million.

They did splash to keep one of their own, however, bringing back Osa Odighizuwa on a four-year, $80 million deal.

They also re-signed safety Markquese Bell, long snapper Trent Sieg and cornerback C.J. Goodwin.

The Cowboys restructured CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott’s contracts, which created more than $50 million of cap space, but have so far barely used any of it.

A mᴀssive extension for star pᴀss rusher Micah Parsons looms, though.

This lack of action comes after the Cowboys opted to retain their stars rather than add premier free agents like Derrick Henry last offseason, which did prove to be a sound strategy.

At the NFL combine earlier this month, COO/co-owner Stephen Jones — Jerry’s son — said that the Cowboys would be “selectively aggressive” in free agency.

Even that sentiment was a little strong for his father.

“I don’t think aggressive is the right word … I wouldn’t call us really void in any area.” JerryJones said. “If you include what we’re going to do in the draft, I wouldn’t see that … I’m not looking at free agency as a place to fill voids.”

Jones prefers to look to the draft to improve after a season in which the Cowboys finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs.

They hold the No. 12 pick in the draft.

“We’ve got a lot of options,” Jones said. “The combine actually I think emphasized that. There’s key players deep at key areas of the team running back, defensive line, outside the pressure players.”

“So frankly, this is a good time to have where we are, we’re about right. I’m not so sure that I’d want to be any higher, and I think that you’re going to get a premium player at this position.”
