Vikings’ Aaron Rodgers NFL free agency stance revealed with Giants, Steelers in pursuit

Aaron Rodgers isn’t expected to follow the Brett Favre career path after all.

After losing Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones in free agency, the Vikings are expected to pivot to making J.J. McCarthy their starter and adding a veteran backup quarterback other than Aaron Rodgers, NFL Network reported Tuesday.

The report said that the Vikings “can’t rule out any possibilities” but it would “be a backup situation … barring something unforeseen.”

Rodgers is looking for a starting job — even one where he mentors a youngster and not one where he is an insurance policy.

So, it’s not a match with the interests of the Vikings, who likely will enter the market for a journeyman like Jacoby Brissett, Carson Wentz or Jameis Winston.

There was speculation that Rodgers was taking his time with his decision in hopes that Darnold and Jones clearing out would open a spot for him with the Vikings.

He could join a playoff team and get a chance to stick it to the rival Packers twice a year, while following his former teammate Favre’s path from the Packers to the Jets to the Vikings to the Hall of Fame.

But Darnold leaving to be the Seahawks starter and Jones leaving to compete to start with the Colts didn’t seem to change the cards after all.

So, where does that leave Rodgers?

Well, the Giants and Steelers — two organizations that literally share DNA — are the most likely landing spots for Rodgers and fellow veteran Russell Wilson.

Which former Super Bowl winner ends up where is anyone’s guess at this point, though it seems that the Steelers initially preferred to re-sign Jets-bound quarterback Justin Fields to Wilson even though Fields was Wilson’s backup at the end of last season.

It is possible that the тιтans, who hold the No.1  pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, could join the mix.
