Jets bust Zach Wilson joins Dolphins on one-year NFL free agency deal

The Jets will get to see a little bit more of Zach Wilson in 2025.

The ex-Jet first-round pick is back in the AFC East after he signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Dolphins on Monday, according to ESPN.

The contract is fully guaranteed and could become worth up to $10 million.

Wilson could serve as a potential backup for Dolphins’ quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who played in only 11 games last season due to injury issues.

Tagovailoa’s injury history could present a better chance for Wilson to get into games this upcoming year.

Wilson did not play during the regular season last year while in Denver and was behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham on the Broncos’ depth chart.

He was traded by the Jets to the Broncos last offseason after Gang Green used their second overall pick in 2021 to take Wilson out of BYU.

The Broncos declined to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie deal, which allowed him to reach free agency this offseason.

While Wilson didn’t play during the regular season, he did turn some heads during the preseason by completing 28-of-44 pᴀsses for 397 yards and three touchdowns.

Now-former teammates of Wilson during his time in Denver believed the year there did the quarterback some good.

тιԍнт end Adam Trautman told The Athletic that it took out of the stress of having to play in New York.

“He came from the toughest media market to play in. Having a year of stress-free work, learning and being able to say, ‘How do I develop as a quarterback?’ I think it was awesome for him,” Trautman said.

Broncos wide receiver David Sills told the outlet that Wilson had “all the attributes you want in a quarterback” and predicted that he would thrive in the league.

“He’s got an insane amount of talent. Since the day he got here, I felt like he had the talent to really play in this league, and I think he will,” he said. “I think it’s just a matter of time before he’s one of the top quarterbacks in this league.”
