Kenny Pickett traded to Browns as ex-Eagles backup gets chance to earn starting job

Kenny Pickett will get the chance to compete for a starting job in 2025, but it won’t be in Philadelphia.

The Eagles traded Pickett to the Browns in a deal that will see the defending Super Bowl champions receive a fifth-round pick in this year’s NFL draft and quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Pickett had backed up star QB Jalen Hurts during his lone season with the Eagles and played in five games – starting one – while completing 25 pᴀsses for 291 yards.

In two years with the Steelers, Pickett started 24 games leading Pittsburgh to a 14-10 record while throwing for 4,474 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Pickett ended up in Philadelphia after he was traded during last offseason.

His arrival in Cleveland will give him the chance to fight for the starter’s role with Deshaun Watson recovering from a torn Achilles and last year’s backup Jameis Winston a free agent.

Tanner McKee is expected to be the Eagles’ No. 2 QB behind Hurts in 2025 after the move with Thompson-Robinson, likely then to be Philly’s third-string quarterback.

Tompson-Robinson was drafted in 2023 by the Browns and has 15 NFL appearances under his belt over the first two years in the league.
