Sam Darnold cashes in with $100 million Seahawks deal after career year with Vikings

Sam Darnold is on the move.

The former Vikings quarterback agreed to a three-year, $100.5 million deal with the Seahawks that includes $55 million guaranteed on Monday as the legal tampering period of NFL free agency begins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Darnold, coming off a career year in Minnesota, had drawn interest from the Seahawks after the club dealt starter Geno Smith to the Raiders on Saturday.

The Steelers also engaged in discussions with Darnold, 27, and the most recent quarterback of his former Jets team, four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers.

Darnold, the Jets’ third overall pick in 2018, enjoyed a career renaissance with the Vikings, with whom he signed last March on a one-year, $10 million deal.

Although he competed against rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy in training camp, Darnold was anointed the starter in August when the former Michigan product underwent knee surgery to fix a torn meniscus.

Darnold led the Vikings to a regular-season record of 14-3, throwing for career-highs in yardage (4,319) and touchdowns (35) en route to a playoff berth.

However, the ghosts of Darnold’s past came back to haunt the Vikings down the stretch, with Minnesota losing out on the No. 1 seed in the NFC to division rival Detroit in the Jan. 5 finale.

The Vikings were knocked out of the playoffs the following week with a 27-9 loss to the Rams.

With a new chapter in Seahawks awaiting Darnold, perhaps he’ll leave the haunting moments from last season in the rear-view.
