What Giants would have offered Rams in Matthew Stafford trade talks

Matthew Stafford seemingly could have been had at a lower trade price than originally thought.

According to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager, a first-round pick — namely, the Giants’ No. 3 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft — was not on the table in a potential deal for the Rams’ QB.

“I know it from all angles, not just from of my relationship with [Rams coach Sean] McVay, but also my relationship with Stafford,” Schrager said on the “Bill Simmons Podcast” that went live on Tuesday. “What I think the trade compensation would have been, Giants give up their second round pick which is the 34th pick, and the Rams give back up a third round and Stafford.

“But then Stafford would then need to tear up the contract and have a mᴀssive contract which would have been paying him close to $15 million more per year than what essentially he is going to play for with the Rams.”

The Giants were prepared to pay the 37-year-old $90-100 million, per The Post’s Paul Schwartz, with NFL Network’s Rich Eisen having reported Big Blue had satisfied Stafford’s contract demands and trade compensation with the Rams.

Stafford, however, opted to remain in Los Angeles on a restructured deal.

The QB’s retaining of a Hollywood address sends the Giants back to a lackluster free agency market — with a less-than-thrilling crop of pᴀss-throwers in the draft.

They’re not the only ones competing to add an arm before the 2025 season kicks off, with the Raiders also having shown interest in Stafford.

Among the top names available on the open market is Sam Darnold, who may not want to return to the Big Apple after a tough start to his career with the Jets, as is fellow Gang Green castoff Aaron Rodgers, who at 41 says he just wants to be valued.

With tested arms in short supply, Rodgers may not even have to leave town to find a willing suitor.
