NFL insider reveals just how close Matthew Stafford came to stunning New York Giants move

The Giants met every one of the demands required to sign Matthew Stafford, only for the quarterback to decide to stay with the Rams.

That is according to NFL Insider Rich Eisen, who claims New York and Tom Brady’s Las Vegas Raiders were ‘way in’ on signing the 37-year-old.

Stafford had been one of the most coveted quarterbacks of this offseason, after leading Los Angeles to the divisional round of the playoffs.

Last week, however, the 37-year-old committed his future to the Rams.

The Giants are now reportedly interested in Aaron Rodgers but first they pulled out all the stops to land Stafford.

That included – as Eisen points out – appointing the quarterback’s brother-in-law, Chad Hall, as ᴀssistant quarterbacks coach.

‘I heard that the Giants’ and Raiders’ interest in Matthew Stafford was quite real and it was hairy at certain junctures last week,’ Eisen said.

‘I heard the Giants hit the number – they not only hit the number for Stafford, I heard from multiple people that they hit the trade comp too. They were in.’

Eisen added: ‘The Giants even hired his brother-in-law – Chad Hall – on the coaching staff. So they really made a run.’

It was claimed that the Giants and Raiders were willing to give Stafford $90million in guaranteed money. ‘I don’t know what (the figure) was, (but) I heard they hit it,’ Eisen added.

When pressed on why the deal never materialized, the NFL insider said: ‘Because I think, at the end of the day, the Staffords like looking at the sun setting over the Pacific ocean and when it all comes down to it, it is the best spot for him.’
