49ers GM reveals update on Brock Purdy’s future with star quarterback yet to agree new deal in San Francisco

49ers GM reveals update on Brock Purdy's future with star quarterback yet to agree new deal in San Francisco

On the back of a disappointing season, the San Francisco 49ers are looking to lock up key pieces of their franchise in the hopes their fortunes in 2025 will be much better than the year prior.

Last season, the Niners went 6-11 as multiple injuries to key players hamstrung the team and resulted in them missing out on the playoffs, despite being favored to have a crack at returning to the Super Bowl.

While some players on the team are free agents, others are approaching the ends of their contracts and are hoping to secure extensions now.

One of those people is quarterback Brock Purdy – the former ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ who took over the starting job and guided the team to an appearance in Super Bowl LVIII.

With his rookie deal set to expire, talks have begun between Purdy and Niners management to work out a new contract, according to ESPN.

‘We have started negotiations,’ said Niners GM John Lynch. ‘We’re talking. I won’t go into negotiations, like always is our stance.

‘We want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we are here and beyond, and we’ll leave it at that.

‘I think the final thing; there’s no guarantees that we’ll get something done, but my experience has been, when both sides are motivated, there’s ample opportunity to do so and we’ve been able to do that.’

The Niners have been very good in the past at keeping core players under contract after their rookie deals expired. Some such cases include тιԍнт end George Kittle, linebacker Fred Warner, defensive end Nick Bosa, and wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel.

However, those aforementioned deals were part of prolonged contract negotiations. In Aiyuk’s case, he missed a majority of training camp last season as he held out to try and get a deal over the line.

In his post-season availability, Purdy indicated that he was hoping to get a deal done before the team starts its offseason program in April.

When asked about how the negotiations with Purdy have gone so far, Lynch described them as ‘good discussions.’

‘They’ve got their thoughts, we’ve got our thoughts,’ the general manager said. ‘We’ve just got to try to make it a reality. He’s played really well, and we know that we have every intention of making him our guy. It’s just coming to an agreement.’

Since joining the league in 2022, Purdy has played in 40 regular season games and pᴀssed for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 interceptions. He’s also played in six postseason games – pᴀssing for 1,343 yards, six touchdowns, and one interception while compiling a record of 4-2.
