You can make the argument that a would-be play for Matthew Stafford is a Hail Mary for self-preservation by Joe Schoen, of course you can.
“We’re gonna build this thing the right way,” Schoen said when the Giants’ nightmare 100th anniversary season mercifully ended and he and Brian Daboll survived it by the grace of John Mara and Steve Tisch. “I’m not gonna do a Hail Mary for self preservation or anything like that. We have a plan in place that we believe in and we’re going to stick with that.”
The plan at that point in time did not include Matthew Stafford.
