Former Giants star Plaxico Burress’ Super Bowl ring sells for near-record $280K at auction

Former Giants star Plaxico Burress’ Super Bowl ring sells for near-record $280K at auction

The Super Bowl ring Plaxico Burress won as a member of the Giants’ 2007 squad that toppled the then-undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII was auctioned off on Sunday for a whopping $280,600 by Heritage Auctions.

Burress holds a special place in Giants lore as the receiver who caught the game-winning touchdown against the Patriots in the Super Bowl to end New England’s hopes of an undefeated season.

The ring had been put up for auction earlier this month around the time of the Super Bowl and had been authenticated on Nov. 16 by the former Giants wide receiver in a letter.

“I received this actual ring as a member of the New York Giants who won Super Bowl XLII held February 3, 2008 against the New England Patriots in Phoenix, AZ. I further certify this ring is the one and only ring and that no duplicate copies were produced,” part of the letter Burress signed read.

The Post previously reported that the ring had been put up for auction by an anonymous owner and the November date of the authentication letter suggested that Burress had sold the ring himself months before when it was put up for auction.

“I would ᴀssume it’s in 2024 — that’s the ᴀssumption we have to take,” HA’s Sports Director Chris Ivy told The Post.

The more than $280,000 price the bling went for became the second-most expensive Super Bowl ring ever sold, only trailing Baltimore Colts head coach Don McCafferty’s Super Bowl V ring that was auctioned in 2022 for $300,000.

Burress had dealt with a series of legal and financial issues following his Super Bowl catch in 2008, with his best-known infraction coming when he sH๏τ himself in the leg with an unlicensed firearm in November of that same year while trying to get into a Manhattan nightclub.

The receiver eventually pled guilty to attempted weapon possession and spent 20 months in jail.

Burress was drafted eighth overall in 2000 by the Steelers and spent four seasons with the Giants, and one year with the Jets in 2011.
