Cowboys offensive lineman Zack Martin set to retire from NFL

Cowboys offensive lineman Zack Martin has played his final down.

Martin is retiring from the NFL after 11 seasons with the Cowboys, according to multiple reports.

ESPN reported that he had met with Jerry Jones on Thursday to inform the Cowboys’ GM and owner of the decision.

Martin had been limited to just 10 games this season and had undergone surgery on his ankle to address the issue a few months back.

The 34-year-old is one of the most decorated offensive linemen in Cowboys history, having been nominated nine times for the Pro Bowl as well as seven-time first-team All-Pro selection.

Martin is also considered likely to be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Cowboys selected Martin in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and he started 162 games over the course of his career.

Former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy praised Martin after Martin decided to have ankle surgery in December.

“Clearly a Hall of Famer, not only for the way he plays but just first class,” McCarthy said at the time. “He just commands a lot of respect. Same person, personality every single day. Hard working. True team guy. Puts the team first. He’s been a joy to work with and I can’t say enough great things about him.”

Retirement questions had first started to pop up when Martin held out in the preseason in 2023 before he eventually worked out an agreement to rework his contract with the Cowboys.

Martin expressed excitement over the hiring of Brian ScH๏τtenheimer as the Cowboys’ new head coach.

“Love SH๏τty. He’s got a lot of good relationships in that building,” Martin told The Post earlier this month. “Excited for him to get an opportunity for him to be a head coach and lead our football team.”
