Green Bay Packers set to cut cornerback on lucrative deal to free up cap space

Green Bay Packers set to cut cornerback on lucrative deal to free up cap space

The Green Bay Packers are reportedly on the verge of cutting cornerback Jaire Alexander to make room in the team’s salary cap this offseason.

After an 11-6 season, the Packers fell to eventual Super Bowl champions Philadelphia in the playoffs. With the season in the rearview, they are left with important decisions to make during the offseason.

Among the players reportedly on the chopping block is Alexander, who could make $17.5million if he remains in Green Bay next year.

With multiple sources reporting the Packers’ frustration with Alexanders’ inability to stay healthy, general manager Brian Gutekunst has remained noncommittal about his future.

‘I know it’s been really, really frustrating for not only him as a player, but us as a club,’ Gutekunst said.

‘When you have a player who’s done what he’s done for us in the past, and then not being able to get him out on the field consistently, that’s tough. You know it’s tough on the player, tough on the organization,’ he continued.

Alexander has appeared in seven of 17 regular season games. Despite practicing semi-regularly, he did not play past November 17.

Furthermore, Alexander went on injury reserve for the last week of the season and underwent surgery for what he said was a torn PCL. Despite his lack of playtime, Alexander led the team in pᴀss breakups with seven and interceptions with two.

Alexander has two years left on his four-year, $84m extension that made him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL at the time.

Green Bay could pick up close to $6.8m in salary cap space for 2025 if they release Alexander. The allowance would be more than $17m if they designate him a cut past June 1.

Alexander, who the team drafted in the first round of the 2018 draft, has yet to comment on the situation. On the last day of media availability this season, he said he had ‘nothing good to say,’ and was not sure if he would return to Green Bay.
