Jets star Garrett Wilson ‘could now stay in New York’ after Aaron Rodgers spell as quarterback was ended

The New York Jets might be searching for a new quarterback but the exit of Aaron Rodgers could have a positive impact elsewhere on the team.

Star wide receiver Garrett Wilson was widely expected to request a trade in the offseason after the Jets missed the playoffs amid his apparent unhappiness at playing alongside Rodgers.

But earlier this week, the Jets announced that Rodgers will not continue with the team after two fruitless years in New York.

Now, according to ESPN, it has emerged that Rodgers’ impending departure ‘greatly increases’ the chance of Wilson staying with the Jets.

Wilson, 24, barely kept his disdain for Rodgers to himself as the Jets season unraveled last year.

After a 19-9 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in December, Wilson said to reporters: ‘I just got to go out and put my best foot forward and hope that things fall my way.

The Jets announced earlier this week that Rodgers’ time with the team has come to an end

‘I’d like to be involved, love to make an impact on the game, but people see it differently. That’s out of my control.’

Minutes later, he took to Instagram with a cryptic post that appeared to be aimed at Rodgers, after a game where he recorded six receptions for 54 yards.

‘You think I’m tryna be cool with that 5 yard catch??? Absolutely no, I’m tryna take that to the crib. Turn it into an explosive. Shake the whole squad/at least go our trying. You probably never understand

‘If you mad about 2 yards just know that’s why we won’t get along.’

If Wilson does stay, it would be a major boost for the new head coach Aaron Glenn, who has a serious rebuilding task on his hands. Wilson has three straight seasons with over 1,000 yards to his name.

Davante Adams and Allen Lazard are expected to leave along with Rodgers, freeing up some cap space for Glenn.

But while Adams and Lazard haven’t been influential enough to be too badly missed at the Jets, it would leave them low on depth in the receiver position.

Along with the obvious vacant gap at quarterback, it would be an area that Glenn would urgently need to address.

Rodgers, meanwhile, is likely to keep on playing at age 41 if the right opportunity emerges for him.
