NBA keen to host a Global Games in Munich, confirms commissioner Adam Silver – but sport’s chief Dave Brody remains coy over having two regular-season match-ups in Europe again

First it was London. Then it was Paris. Next it appears to be Munich in terms of European cities hosting a NBA regular-season Global Game.

It was only three weeks ago that the NBA took over Paris, to great success, as they made history by hosting two regular-season matches in quick succession in the French capital as the San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers faced each other on January 23 and 25.

Those matches were the 13th and 14th games of their kind to be played in Europe and it seems likely that any future iterations could take place in a new city.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the first fixture on January 23, which the Spurs won 140-110 at the Accor Arena in Paris, NBA commissioner Silver was asked about a future fixture being played in Germany.

‘Stay tuned. We’re looking very closely at potentially bringing a NBA regular season game to Germany, he said keeping his cards close to his chest.

‘It’s something that our office in Europe is concentrating on at this precise moment.’

It must be noted though that it is unclear where in Munich a potential match could be held at present with the BMW Park, home of FC Bayern Basketball, having a maximum capacity of 11,500 – which is considerably smaller than a fit-for-purpose NBA arena.

Two days later after Silver spoke, Mail Sport were invited to a round-table chat, on behalf of 2K Games, with NBA vice president of global partnerships Dave Brody and 2k’s lifestyle and content marketing chief Ronnie Singh aka Ronnie 2K.

Having been physically present when Silver spoke, Mail Sport asked Brody if he could elaborate any further on Silver’s words. However, just like the commissioner, he remained coy when asked if the NBA would look to host multiple regular-season games in the same city in quick succession again.

‘We’re still finalising our plans and more will be announced shortly,’ he teased ahead of the Pacers’ huge bounce-back 136-98 win later that evening.

‘We had an announcement earlier in this week with Tissot, who are the presenting partner of the games this year, and included in that was an acknowledgment that Tissot will present a game in Europe in the next 10 years. So, where is to be confirmed but Europe is a huge market for us and we’ll continue to bring games here and we’re excited to finalise our plans for next year and beyond.

‘What I would say is that there have been other Global Games, like in Abu Dhabi, where we have done two games in a week before.

‘So that model is new for Paris, and it’s been incredible, but there has been other markets where we have done that before.’

Even though he was тιԍнт-lipped on that subject, Brody did admit that the NBA are trying to enhance their experience for their global fan base.

‘This is our 14th and 15th games in France and our 96th and 97th in Europe. We started with one game but now we have two in the same week and we saw the interest as it sold out within 24 hours. Now we’re trying out new events with NBA Paris which also sold out.

‘We’re trying to continue to take advantage and provide candidly fans around the world with the experience that they are craving – that may take shape in different ways with more games, new events, NBA House and nine partners coming on board this week to support the games.

‘So for us, I think we’re going to continue to learn from what we’ve done, but also where we see opportunities and that align with our fan interests, we’re certainly willing to try new things that get them and enhance their NBA experience.’

The NBA are partners with 2K Games and their popular game NBA 2K – which is the leading basketball console game. Both share a common goal in growing the sport as Singh explained the importance from his side of things.

‘The NBA is obviously focused on international growth and we are too,’ he said. ‘The offshoot is that most people who live in the United States that love basketball and own a video console probably have our game so all of our growth is going to come from alternate regions – which is similar to the NBA with their targeted new markets.

‘You see it and feel it here while in Paris that having a local guy [San Antonio’s Paris-born superstar Victor Wembanyama] makes it different to other NBA Global Games as the host city are rooting for their hometown guy.

‘I hope that some of these other regions get a similar rising kind of star like that as it will only help that regions interest in the game. Eventually you want to root that is relatable to you and I hope that England – my dad’s side of the family are from there – get their star soon as that would be really great for that territory.’

With eight current active German players in the NBA, it seems Munich could be the next location on the horizon within Europe.
