There may be some family business at the root of a potential Rams and Matthew Stafford split.
Colin Cowherd said on his show, “The Herd,” that the Rams’ front office was growing tired of all the talk surrounding their star quarterback, along with his wife, Kelly, going on her podcast and criticizing the Rams’ front office for how they’ve handled decisions.
“The Rams like Matt Stafford, but they’re tiring of the constant quarterback talk, his wife saying things publicly,” Cowherd said Thursday on his show. “They’re not real happy with Cooper Kupp going public with something they tried to keep quiet … They’re kinda over Cooper Kupp, and with that, a little bit Matt Stafford. They like him, but they don’t want to restructure his deal and give him a new contract.”
Kelly was previously very critical of the Rams’ front office for deciding to move on from Kupp this offseason, with the hope that they can net some draft capital back and get cheaper at the skill positions.
“I honestly wasn’t planning on discussing this, but hell, why not,” she said on her podcast “The Morning After” on Feb. 6. “My husband, like, wants to win. He’s not trying to put a team in a bad situation. If you’re catching my drift, you’re catching my drift.”
“I will say, the trading away of Cooper? … I’m confused, because we were one play away from going to the NFC Championship. I have to be the dog in this situation — I want the respect for him that he deserves. I love the city of L.A. With that being said … I love an adventure.”
Teams have reportedly been calling on Stafford regarding his availability, although the Rams have said they do not intend to move him at this time.
Still, Cowherd relayed a bizarre trade scenario that pairs the Giants with Stafford, who would inexplicably part with their No. 3 overall pick.
Some have pushed back against the idea that Stafford would require the No. 3 pick to obtain.
“Meanwhile, the Giants do not like the quarterback (draft) class, and Brian Daboll, the head coach, and Joe Schoen, the GM, have got to win or they’ll be fired by Thanksgiving,” Cowherd said. “So they are going to make a move, I believe, on Matt Stafford.”
The Giants have been steadfast in their recruiting of of the 2025 NFL Draft class, looking at Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward,and Jaxson Dart as potential selections.
Stafford, 37, is in the middle of a contract negotiation with the Rams that stems from last season where they were unable to find a solution.
If Stafford and the Rams were to part, Cowherd postulates that the Rams should go after Aaron Rodgers as a stop-gap option.
