Major ‘change’ to Super Bowl broadcast as NFL’s biggest game set to look very different on Fox

Major ‘change’ to Super Bowl broadcast as NFL’s biggest game set to look very different on Fox

Fox is rumored to be making a drastic change for its Super Bowl LIX coverage on Sunday.

While the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs battle it out at New Orleans’ Superdome, the network will be unveiling a new scorebug at the bottom of the screen, according images of the graphic shared on social media. Some have cited the Catch The Blitz podcast for revealing the alleged plan, while others have credited aggregator and breaking news reporter, Dov Kleiman.

DailyMail.com has reached out Fox Sports for comment.

A scorebug is the small graphic during a sports broadcast that shows the score, time remaining, down and distance, as well as the timeout situation for both teams. Fans typically prefer smaller, less-intrusive scorebugs that don’t obscure any of the action.

Fox previously unveiled a new scorebug when the Eagles and Chiefs tangled in Super Bowl LVII in Miami, leading to some natural criticism among fans, some of whom found it too tall.

The rumored change for Sunday, though, is far more drastic.

Rather than a small scorebug fixed in the middle of the bottom of the screen, this alleged proposal would see the scorebug expand from end to end. And while it is a bit shorter than Fox’s previous model, this one has a purple background making it somewhat distracting.

Although they don’t know if Fox really does plan to use this version of the scorebug, they lashed out against the alleged proposal nonetheless.

‘Major downgrade,’ one fan wrote on X.

‘The old one looks so much cleaner,’ another added. ‘The ‘New’ one has way too much going on.’

A second fan agreed: ‘The new one is too cluttered. The original is better imo.’

Several gamers likened the new scorebug to the one used by EA Sports’ Madden video game.

The bigger news for Fox on Sunday will be the presence of Tom Brady calling his first Super Bowl. Partnered with Kevin Burkhardt, Brady replaced the popular Greg Olsen as Fox’s top color commentator in 2024 after signing a reported 10-year, $375 million contract with the network.

Reviews for Brady have been mixed in his first season, but he did get one major vote of confidence after the NFC Championship from The Athletic’s media reporter, Andrew Marchand.

‘Brady is having his best game,’ the well-known media critic wrote on X.

As for Brady’s future in the booth, his agent Don Yee denied reports the ex-QB could quit announcing to focus on the Las Vegas Raiders full time after being approved as a minority owner of the team last year.

‘Tom has had a tremendous amount of fun working with Fox this year, and he’s really excited about the future with Fox and his growth on their team,’ Yee told Sports Business Journal. ‘And this year was the first year of a long relationship.’
