Matthew Stafford trade whispers emerge at Super Bowl

Matthew Stafford trade whispers emerge at Super Bowl

After coming up just short in the playoffs against the Eagles, the Rams could consider a significant change this offseason.

Matthew Stafford’s future with the franchise remains a bit of an unknown — even after the 36-year-old communicated to the team that he plans to play next season, per an NFL Network report.

“No one’s talking about the Matthew Stafford thing. I don’t understand it,” Albert Breer said on the “Dan Patrick Show,” which is airing live from New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl 2025.

“I don’t understand why nobody’s talking about the idea that Stafford could be available, and if you’re another team, you’re probably calling the Rams.”

Patrick added that not many teams would be looking to add Stafford at this juncture, although Breer postulated that the Steelers should be a team that has an interest in the Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

Breer detailed how the Rams and Stafford were forced last season to put a “band-aid” on a tenuous four-to-five-month negotiation that resulted in the quarterback getting a short-term raise for the 2024 season, and no formal decision was made on years going forward.

“What if Matthew Stafford wants a market correction and says, what is it, seven or eight guys are making over $50 million? I want $50 million. There’s just a lot of stuff there where if I’m another team I’m making that call,” Breer said.

The Steelers will enter the offseason without a clear-cut starting quarterback, with team president Art Rooney III recently saying his “preference” would be to bring back one of Russell Wilson or Justin Fields.

Stafford could be considered an upgrade over either of those options.

While Stafford’s future is up in the air, veteran receiver Cooper Kupp is set to be traded.

Kupp, 31, posted on social media that he and the Rams would be parting ways this offseason.

“I was informed that the team will be seeking a trade immediately and will be working with me and my family to find the right place to continue competing for championships,” Kupp wrote on X. “I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA,”

Breer and Patrick speculated that any team looking to acquire Stafford should also be looking to bring in Kupp.
