Saquon Barkley takes swipe at former New York Giants teammates ahead of playing first Super Bowl with Eagles

Just before he plays in his first ever Super Bowl, Philadelphia Eagles running back served up something of a jab at his former team during Super Bowl Opening Night.

Barkley made an appearance during press availability at the Caesars Superdome on Monday – just a day after he and the rest of the team made their way down to New Orleans.

It’s his first appearance in the Super Bowl and he’s doing so with a new team after leaving the New York Giants over the summer in free agency.

One of the people asking him a question was Jameis Winston, who spent last season on the Cleveland Browns but is set to be a free agent this summer.

When Winston asked Barkley who would be the team to sign him, Barkley smoothly replied, ‘I think New York need a quarterback right now.’

When asked to clarify, Barkley did confirm that he was talking about his former team.

The choice to leave the Giants for one of their biggest division rivals was widely panned and criticized by New York fans at the time.

It made it worse that the Giants were one of the bottom feeders in the NFL this season, while the Eagles’ offense was supercharged with Barkley’s arrival.

However, he did admit that joining an NFC East rival came with some hesitation considering the years of vitriol directed his way.

When asked about the pros and cons of joining the Eagles, Barkley joked, ‘The only con about Philly was I might get some slack because I played in New York.’

But the choice has clearly paid off. Now, Barkley has the chance to fulfill a dream and win a championship.

Speaking to reporters, he praised his teammates and shared one of the motivational quotes that coach Nick Sirianni gives to the team.

‘One of my favorite quotes that Nick says all the time, “You can’t be great without the greatness of others.” That’s how it works. We have a great team, but we all want to do it together.

‘That’s the reason why we’ve been successful, and it’s going to take everyone again this Sunday. Yeah, you just got to take it all in. This is part of it. You got to enjoy it.

‘I’m happy to be here, happy to have conversations with you guys. At the same time, it’s a business locked in. But today, you enjoy. You enjoy the moment and have fun with it.’

Barkley only reached the playoffs once with the Giants – losing in the NFC Divisional round to, incidentally, the Eagles.

But after never getting past the Divisionals, Barkley is now playing in the Super Bowl for the first time.

He’ll be facing off against the Kansas City Chiefs in a re-match of Super Bowl LVII – when the Chiefs beat Philadelphia 38-35.
