New York Jets hire Tanner Engstrand as offensive coordinator as questions linger over Aaron Rodgers' future

The Jets have appointed Tanner Engstrand as their new offensive coordinator – just days after New York hired his former Detroit Lions colleague Aaron Glenn as head coach.

Glenn and new general manager Darren Mougey have been tasked with overseeing yet another new era at the Jets.

They are looking to rebuild a team that missed out on the playoffs for the 14th straight season, finishing 5-12 – despite having Aaron Rodgers under center all year.

Engstrand is slated to work with Rodgers but the 41-year-old’s future is uncertain heading into the 2025 season.

Engstrand and Glenn were part of Dan Campbell’s coaching staff in Detroit, helping transform the Lions into one of the NFL’s best teams.

Engstrand joined as an offensive ᴀssistant before working as тιԍнт ends coach and pᴀssing game coordinator.

His relationship with Mougey, meanwhile, dates back to 2004 when they were both quarterbacks at San Diego State.

The future of Rodgers is one pivotal question the new front office must address as they look to turn around the Jets’ fortunes.

The quarterback has teased retirement – and playing elsewhere – but Glenn refused to answer questions on whether he wants Rodgers under center moving forward.

‘This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers, folks,’ Glenn said on Monday, when he and Mougey spoke for the first time since joining New York.

‘Aaron Rodgers will be talked about. We have texted our communication with Aaron Rodgers and (decisions will be made) as we continue to look at the roster,’ he continued.

‘We’re going sit and talk and build the whole roster… we’re looking forward to that process. I can’t tell you how long that process will take… (but) we’re going to get the right answer.’

He added: ‘We plan on building the best roster that we can… everybody’s under the microscope. That’s just what it is. So we’re gonna do the best we can to make sure we build a better best roster.’
