Bill Belichick’s son, Brian Belichick, departing Patriots as Mike Vrabel era begins

The New England era is officially over for the Belichick family.

Brian Belichick, the son of legendary ex-Patriots coach Bill Belichick, is departing the team after serving as the safeties coach for the past five years, multiple reports said Tuesday.

Brian began his Patriots career in 2016 as a scouting ᴀssistant. He shifted to coaching ᴀssistant a year later and was elevated to safeties coach in 2020.

His father, a six-time Super Bowl winner with the franchise, departed the Patriots in January 2024 after 24 seasons at the helm.

Belichick’s other son, Steve Belichick, also left the team following his father’s exit in 2024 and went on to become the defensive coordinator of the Washington Huskies.

He will now serve as an ᴀssistant coach on Belichick’s UNC staff, ESPN reported.

It’s been an offseason filled with change in New England, with the team firing its first-year coach, ex-Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, earlier this month after an ugly 4-13 campaign.

Mike Vrabel, a three-time Super Bowl champion linebacker with the Patriots, was hired as the team’s new coach days after Mayo’s dismissal.

He hired former Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Although the elder Belichick’s name swirled in this year’s hiring cycle — with The Post’s Brian Costello reporting in December that he inquired about the Jets job in a stunning move — he joined the college ranks for the first time in his career last month as head coach of the Tar Heels.

Belichick, who agreed to a five-year deal with UNC, vowed to remain at the college level in his first remarks as coach.

“I didn’t come here to leave,” Belichick said in his introductory press conference last month.

It remains to be seen if another Belichick will be added to the Tar Heels’ staff.
