Aaron Glenn, Darren Mougey will both report to Woody Johnson in change to Jets’ power structure

The Jets are changing their organizational reporting structure with the hires of Aaron Glenn as coach and Darren Mougey as general manager.

Both men will report to owner Woody Johnson.

Mougey will have control of the 53-man roster, but will not be Glenn’s boss.

The Jets have gone back and forth over the last decade or so between a structure where both men report to Johnson and one where the coach reports to the GM.

Robert Saleh reported to Joe Douglas in the previous regime.

“We’ve gone back and forth,” Johnson said. “They’ll both come talk to me.”

It feels like Glenn has more juice because he was hired first. He was involved in Mougey’s second interview last week. At one point Monday, Johnson referred to Mougey as Glenn’s “sidekick.”

Mougey said he did not think it was odd for the team to hire the coach before the GM.

“I think you’ve actually seen it happening more and more,” Mougey said. “I don’t consider it like that. I think they both [searches] had their processes. There was a lot of dialogue throughout the process with both parties, too.”

Glenn was hesitant to discuss any current Jets players, saying he wants to take time to evaluate all of them.

But he did have familiarity with cornerback Sauce Gardner after evaluating him during the 2022 draft process as the Lions defensive coordinator.

Glenn, a Pro Bowl cornerback himself, said he recognizes Gardner’s talent.

“He was a damn good player,” Glenn said of the draft process. “That’s why he’s made the Pro Bowl when he’s been here. What he did last year, we’re in the process of looking at that. If there’s issues, we’ll fix that. The thing is he came here as a Pro Bowler. We expect him to leave as a Pro Bowler.”

Glenn was asked what he wants the idenтιтy of the Jets offense to be.

“We’re going to be New York Jets,” Glenn said. “As you see us play, you’ll be able to see the idenтιтy at that point. I always say family business stays in house, so I’m not going to let that outside this building. Our players are going to know what our idenтιтy is going to be and you’re going to find out by the way we play.”

Jets DT Quinnen Williams was named to the Pro Bowl Games as a replacement for Chiefs star Chris Jones.
