The Empire State Building was lit up in Eagles green on Sunday night shortly after Philadelphia punched their ticket to Super Bowl 2025 with a win over the Commanders.
The iconic New York landmark’s X account had forewarned New Yorkers that they would be lighting up the building in the colors of the winning teams in the NFC and AFC championship games, clearly remembering the controversy from two years ago.
New Yorkers from every walk of life appeared to be livid when the Empire State Building was lit up in Eagles green in 2023 after they had won the NFC Championship game.
The Empire State Building’s X account posted earlier on Sunday with a message of “Please don’t yell at me,” anticipating the possible anger that could come if the Eagles won.
“[Commanders] I need you to do me a huge favor in the next 15 minutes,” they posted when it looked like the Eagles were on the way to a win.

The account finally posted a video of the Empire State Building in Eagles colors with another tongue-in-cheek post to accompany it.
“I’m sorry I have to do this,” it read, “shining in @Eagles colors in honor of their NFC Championship win.”
But some New Yorkers didn’t appear ready to accept the Empire State Building’s apology and fired back in replies on the social media platform.
“You literally can refuse to do this,” one person wrote.
“Lie and say that it’s for Wagner or Manhattan,” another person suggested.

The last time the Empire State Building made such a move, it created an even bigger stir, with everyone from Gov. Kathy Hochel to Mayor Eric Adams chiming in.
Then-sanitation commissioner and current NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch had the Department of Sanitation post a message on X expressing disappointment with the decision, which included a jab at the Eagles.
She doubled down on it in a comment to The Post at the time.
“In addition to keeping our city clean, I will always defend New York’s honor, especially against the Filthadelphia Eagles,” said Tisch, whose cousins are Giants co-owners Steve, Jonathan and Laurie Tisch.”
The Eagles’ green won’t remain for too long, with the Empire State Building slated to turn to the colors of the winner of the AFC тιтle game between the Bills and Chiefs.
