Why Tom Brady hiring Pete Carroll at the Raiders is great news for the Kansas City Chiefs

Pete Carroll’s move to the Raiders means that the Chiefs will likely retain one of their top coaches next season.

Carroll, 73, was tapped by Las Vegas minority owner Tom Brady to be the franchise’s next head coach.

And that’s great news for the Chiefs, as their defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo had previously interviewed for the role.

Since joining the franchise in 2019, Spagnuolo has led one of the stingiest defensive units in the league, as they’ve allowed less than 20 points per game in three separate seasons.

Kansas City’s mark of just 19.2 points allowed per game this season ranked fourth in the NFL.

That unsurprisingly helped Spagnuolo’s stock during this cycle of coaching interviews, and he also met with the Jaguars and Jets to discuss their head coaching roles.

A four-time Super Bowl champion (with his first coming as the Giants’ defensive coordinator), Spagnuolo was the Rams’ head coach from 2009-11 and compiled a record of 10-38.

He also coached the Giants for four games as an interim coach in 2017.

The Chiefs’ success this season – as they went 15-2 in the regular season – also led to interest in offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.

Nagy, formerly the head coach of the Bears, interviewed for the Jets’ head coaching position.

That role has now been filled by former Lions offensive coordinator Aaron Glenn.

While Brady previously revealed he would have a ‘pᴀssive’ role with the Raiders, that has proven to be anything but the case.

The Patriots legend took an active role in helping to interview head coaching candidates, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter also spoke about how Brady was calling the sH๏τs in Vegas.

‘This was all about Tom leading an organization and finding somebody that he had respect for,’ he said on the Pat McAfee Show.

As the head coach of the Jets (one season), Patriots (three seasons) and Seahawks (14 seasons), Carroll has amᴀssed a 170-120-1 record in the NFL, and led Seattle to the Super Bowl during the 2013 season.

He also coached USC in the college ranks from 2001-09 and won two national championships there.
