The NFL spotlight is not always kind.

Liam Coen’s adventurous stretch bouncing between Florida NFL franchises left Buccaneers fans fuming and NFL insiders shocked.

A number of reporters noted Thursday that the Buccaneers were trying and failing to get in touch with Coen as rumors surfaced he was again in talks with the Jaguars to become their head coach.

The narrative of Coen going dark on Tampa Bay’s front office — a day after spurning Jacksonville and agreeing to return as Tampa Bay’s offensive coordinator — certainly did not paint him in the most positive of lights.

However, Coen’s wife, Ashley, said there was more to the story than was being reported.

“I hate that I even have to say this, but when people are negative about my kids, I will not be silent,” Ashley wrote on X. “Our son is sick, we were at the hospital (Thursday) seeing a specialist for his autoimmune disease. Please don’t spread misinformation and ᴀssume because you heard one side.”

Coen, 39, was considered the top target for the Jaguars job before pulling out of consideration on Wednesday morning and returning to the Buccaneers reportedly as the NFL’s highest-paid coordinator.

Then, later that day, the Jaguars suddenly fired GM Trent Baalke after initially sticking with him following the dismissal of coach Doug Pederson the day after a dreadful 4-13 season.

On Thursday, reports emerged that Coen was again talking with the Jaguars about their head coaching job.

By the end of the day, it was reported that Coen would be the head coach of the Jaguars with the announcement officially coming Friday.

Coen had reportedly told Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles about the situation, but the front office was unable to reach him as the drama unfolded.

The proximity of the two cities — Jacksonville is around 200 miles northeast of Tampa — certainly makes it possible that Coen spent time in the hospital with his son and met with Jaguars owner Shad Khan all on Thursday.

This is likely the Coen family’s first taste of serious national media attention after he has risen through the college and NFL ranks as a successful offensive coordinator.
