A whirlwind week for the Jaguars now seems like it will end with a new head coach joining the franchise.

Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen is expected to head north to Jacksonville to take over the Jaguars’ head coaching job, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini first reported.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the two sides have not yet reached the finish line, but a deal is expected to be done that will see Coen become the team’s 10th head coach in franchise history.

Jeff Howe of The Athletic added Coen has informed the Bucs that he intends to take the Jaguars job.

It’s been a whirlwind week for Coen, who emerged as a front-runner for the job Tuesday and was reportedly viewed so favorably that he was potentially going to get offered the gig Wednesday after a second interview, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

Nevertheless, Coen pulled out of the running for the job Wednesday to then leave the team — seemingly — with one fewer option.

Later in the day, though, the Jaguars fired general manager Trent Baalke as the head coaching search took the Coen twist.

“Following several discussions with Trent Baalke this week, we both arrived at the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interests to respectfully separate, effective immediately,” owner Shad Khan said in a statement. “Trent leaves us with my deepest appreciation for his efforts over the past five seasons.”

On Thursday, it was then reported by multiple outlets that Khan and Coen met after the firing to talk about the head coaching vacancy again.

Coen has been an offensive coordinator for the last four years at the college (Kentucky in 2021 and 2023) and NFL levels (Rams in 2022, Bucs in 2024), leading the Tampa Bay offense this past season.

His work coincided with Baker Mayfield putting up career-highs with 4,500 pᴀssing yards and 41 touchdowns.

Now, Coen should be inheriting another former No. 1 overall pick in Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville.
