Kelly Stafford reveals most ‘amazing’ thing about Carrie Underwood’s performance at Donald Trump’s inauguration

Kelly Stafford reveals most 'amazing' thing about Carrie Underwood's performance at Donald Trump's inauguration

Carrie Underwood has received backlash from some for singing at Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration – but Kelly Stafford is not one of them.

Underwood performed ‘America the Beautiful’ as Trump was welcomed into the Oval Office for a second time on Monday.

And while the country star was criticized by many fans for aligning herself with Trump, Stafford – the wife of Rams quarterback Matthew – defended Underwood.

Stafford agreed with ‘Morning After’ co-host Hank Winchester that ‘we have to just respect the power at hand’ and called it ‘amazing’ that she wasn’t aware of Underwood’s politics before.

‘I mean, I just feel like that’s kind of amazing. ‘And I think it surprised a lot of people that she was going to perform,’ she said, via the New York Post.

Winchester also defended Underwood’s decision to perform at the inauguration.

‘I thought Carrie Underwood was fantastic,’ he said. ‘I don’t like people coming after her for… to me, no matter who I voted for, if a sitting president calls me and says, would you like to come to the White House? I’m going to the White House.’

‘Put your politics aside,’ Winchester added. ‘A president is a president you honor and respect the office.’

Stafford struck a similar tone but stopped short of celebrating Trump’s inauguration.

‘When they’re [the Trump administration] in there, you can’t change it,’ she said, referring to Trump’s critics. ‘You just gotta pray that they make the right decisions for this country. You gotta support any way you can, even if you don’t like them. You just gotta do it until the next term and then we’ll bitch again.’

In a statement after it was announced that she would be performing at the inauguration, Underwood said ‘I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event.

‘I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,’ she added.

Stafford’s comments regarding Underwood come after she cryptically addressed her husband’s future in the NFL.

Following the Rams’ loss to the Eagles in the NFC divisional round, the quarterback, 36, was non-committal regarding his future, and told reporters he would ‘take some time to think about it.’

A day later, Kelly further fueled speculation that her husband could retire as she paid tribute to him on Instagram.

‘Aren’t enough words to express how proud I am,’ she said. ‘I joke about us being old and tired but honestly I could never get tired of watching you out there or watching our girls cheer for their daddy. I’m wondering if this is the end or not… guess we will find out.’

Following the game, in which Stafford threw for 324 yards and two touchdowns, he was asked if he had ‘good football’ remaining.

‘Sure feels like it,’ he said.
