Jets legend Joe Namath gives his verdict on Aaron Glenn's arrival in New York as head coach

Joe Namath highly approves the New York Jets’ decision to hire Aaron Glenn as their head coach after a disastrous season left a vacancy on the sideline.

Amid their 5-12 season, the Jets parted ways with Robert Saleh, as the dominoes continued toppling over toward their 14th straight playoff miss.

On Wednesday, news surfaced about Glenn, the former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, planning to take the job as the Jets hope for a resurgence next season.

Hours later, Namath expressed his excitement over the hire on social media.

‘I’m hoping all @nyjets fans are as thrilled as my family and I are that Aaron Glenn is our new Head Coach,’ Namath wrote on X. ‘I wish the season would start next week!’

Namath, 81, played for the Jets from 1965-1976 and was crowned the Super Bowl champion in 1969. New York upset the Baltimore Colts, 16-7 to win the тιтle.

The team has not won a championship since and has an overall regular season record of 408 wins, 500 losses, and eight ties.

Glenn was the Jets’ preferred candidate, and NFL insider Josina Anderson first reported on Wednesday that he made it known he plans to take the job.

A few hours later, multiple reports emerged that a deal had been signed for Glenn to take on his first head coaching role in the NFL.

The in-demand DC, who was previously drafted by the Jets in the first round in 1994 and then went on to work for the franchise as a personnel scout from 2012 to 2013, has been in Detroit since 2021, where his stock has risen dramatically.

He was in New Jersey on Tuesday for more talks with the team, following the Lions’ shock elimination from the playoffs on Saturday.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Glenn landed back in Detroit on the private jet of Jets owner Woody Johnson.

It was claimed on Tuesday that the job was Glenn’s ‘if he wanted it’, and that now appears to be the case.

Glenn’s work in helping to transform the Lions under head coach Dan Campbell has made him one of the leading coaching candidates for teams this offseason.

He was also scheduled to interview with the New Orleans Saints later this week, but it now appears that will not happen.

Detroit’s offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, got his head coaching job with the Chicago Bears.

Defensive line coach Terrell Williams was promoted as the defensive coordinator on Mike Vrabel’s New England Patriots staff.

Glenn is the seventh head coach the Jets have hired since 2000, with all but one, Adam Gase, being a first-time head coach when they were hired.

The new head coach’s arrival comes as Aaron Rodgers’ future with the team remains uncertain.
