What already has Boomer Esiason worried about Jets’ potential Aaron Glenn hire

Boomer Esiason sees the Jets doing the same thing and expecting different results.

With Gang Green trending toward hiring the tandem of Aaron Glenn and Lance Newmark for their head coach and general manager openings, respectively, the former Jets quarterback doesn’t like the idea of another first-year head coach getting a sH๏τ in the Big Apple.

“I don’t necessarily know that the Jets, because we’ve seen it, it’s not the best place for an inexperienced head coach,” Esiason said on his “Boomer and Gio” WFAN radio show.

Co-host Gregg Giannotti agreed that after firing Robert Saleh early in the season to just turn around and hire another young defensive coach could be their undoing.

Saleh was hired after having no head coaching experience, although he sparkled during his time as the defensive coordinator for the 49ers.

“For [owner Woody Johnson] to just now repeat the same pattern and go find a coordinator who is a first-time head coach and do this all over again. Defensive, by the way,” Giannotti added

“I’m not saying that you can’t succeed with a defensive head coach. You’ve seen others succeed, but a lot of those times, those guys like Sean McDermott have an all-world quarterback that is basically carrying them. But here you go again. We could very easily be wrong about this. I hope that I am wrong about this, but this feels like to me a really, really bad idea.”

The Jets had a second in-person interview scheduled with Glenn, as well as Newmark, on Tuesday, and both are expected to get a hard look from Johnson.

No one else has received a second interview from the Jets, while Glenn and Newmark are said to have “a strong relationship.”

Glenn, the Lions’ defensive coordinator, led a strong unit for Detroit before injuries hampered his group. Those injuries seemingly caught up to his defense during the divisional round loss to the Commanders.

The Jets’ respective searches could be ending soon as pressure begins to mount and head coaching vacancies fill up.

Johnson hired the 33rd Team, led by ex-general manager Mike Tannenbaum, to lead the coaching search.

It began by bringing in a wide net of candidates, but appears to have narrowed its candidates.

Glenn previously played cornerback for the team from 1994-2001, where he was among the best cornerbacks in the NFL.
