Nick Saban backs Deion Sanders for Cowboys head coaching job

Nick Saban wants Deion Sanders to be the next coach of the Cowboys.

The legendary college football coach joined “The Pivot” podcast with Ryan Clark this week and gave out his Sanders endorsement when they joked about Saban potentially returning to the NFL.

“I want him to get that job,” Saban said of the current Colorado Buffaloes head coach.

The Cowboys are in the hunt for a new head coach after parting ways with Mike McCarthy earlier this month following five seasons at the helm.

Sanders’ name has been connected to the position in recent days, although NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that no interview was scheduled or “expected” with the former Cowboys defensive back.

Even so, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reportedly spoke with Sanders about the job and is “enamored with the idea” of hiring him, according to Dallas insider Ed Werder.

Sanders, who played five seasons with the Cowboys, winning Super Bowl XXX, told ESPN earlier this month that he talked with Jones about the vacancy, calling it an “intriguing” opportunity.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders said. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders has spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Colorado, going 13-12.

His son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is expected to be one of the top picks in April’s NFL draft.

A year ago, Saban stepped down as the head coach at Alabama after a run that saw six national тιтles over 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide and another with LSU.

Sanders, a friend of Saban’s, congratulated the coach on his legendary career after news broke of his retirement last January.

“WOW! College Football just lost the GOAT to retirement,” Sanders wrote. “WOW! I knew it would happen 1 day soon but not this soon. The game has change so much that it chased the GOAT away. College football let’s hold up our mirrors and say HONESTLY what u see.”
