The lower dungeon of Warwick Castle has a hidden room known as the ‘oubliette’ where prisoners were abandoned and left to be forgotten.
The room was accessible only through a hatch in the ceiling.
These dungeons were dimly lit, damp and dirty and allowed no means of escape due to the single entrance and exit.
