A Hidden Treasure Emerges from Illegal Excavations

In a surprising turn of events, archaeologists have unearthed stunning Roman-era mosaics during a rescue excavation in the Kızıltepe district of Mardin, southeastern Türkiye. The discovery, made in response to reports of illegal digging, has shed new light on the region’s rich historical tapestry.

From Illicit Activity to Archaeological Triumph

The story began when officials received word of unauthorized excavations in the Uzunkaya Neighbourhood, approximately 30 kilometers from the district center. Upon investigation of the area known locally as Kela Hanma (Lady’s Castle), they found evidence of widespread damage to the site’s architectural integrity.

A Race Against Time: The Rescue Excavation

On October 2nd, a team led by Mardin Museum Director Abdulgani Tarkan launched a rescue operation. Joined by expert archaeologists and specialists from the Diyarbakır Restoration and Conservation Regional Laboratory Directorate, they embarked on a mission to salvage what remained of the site’s hidden treasures.

Unveiling a Roman Villa Rustica

The team’s efforts were rewarded with the discovery of an extensive mosaic floor, believed to be part of a Villa Rustica – a walled rural settlement featuring a central building surrounded by smaller auxiliary structures. Spanning approximately 100 square meters, the mosaic showcased an intricate array of designs and motifs.

A Mosaic Menagerie: Artistry Frozen in Time

Aquatic Wonders and Geometric Marvels

The newly uncovered mosaic floor revealed a captivating blend of geometric patterns and naturalistic imagery. Visitors to the site would have once walked upon a sea of fish scales, triangles, hexagons, and octagons, interspersed with arches and trees. But it was the depiction of aquatic life that truly set this mosaic apart.

Rare Creatures of the Deep

Director Tarkan emphasized the unique nature of the find, noting the presence of rarely depicted sea creatures such as octopuses alongside a variety of fish species. This aquatic theme, uncommon in the region, has excited researchers and art historians alike.
