Where things stand between Cowboys and Deion Sanders after Jerry Jones flirtation

The Cowboys are not expected to interview Deion Sanders for their open head coaching spot despite team owner Jerry Jones having had a conversation with the Dallas great.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that no interview was scheduled or “expected” with the former Cowboys defensive back and in an earlier appearance on the network he said that he would “be surprised, probably very surprised, if something did in fact get scheduled.”

Sanders confirmed that he spoke with Jones last week after reports surfaced connecting him to the Cowboys job.

“To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it’s intriguing,” Sanders told ESPN at the time. “I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up and process it, and think about it, it’s intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community.”

Sanders has been the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes for the past two seasons and helped lead them to a 9-4 record in 2024.

Sanders’ statement expressed his happiness in his current position, but didn’t outright shoot down the notion he could be eying the Dallas job.

Former ESPN reporter Ed Werder had reported last week that if Sanders were to be offered the job he would “almost certainly” accept it.

The Cowboys have been in the market for a new coach after they parted ways with Mike McCarthy shortly before his contract was set to expire.

Dallas has already had a number of coaches come in for interviews, including former Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury could also get an interview request from the Cowboys, according to Rapoport.

“The Dallas Cowboys know how coveted their job is. They know what kind of opportunity it is,” Rapoport said. “They do believe they’ll be able to get a top candidate.”
