EXCLUSIVEMajor update on Louis Rees-Zammit's NFL future after Jacksonville Jaguars contract expired

Louis Rees-Zammit has an offer on the table to rejoin the Jacksonville Jaguars, Mail Sport understands, as the rugby star-turned NFL hopeful ponders his next move.

The 23-year-old Welshman is currently away in Asia following the end of his contract with the Jaguars, which expired following the end of the regular season.

He is expected to make a decision on his future in the next few weeks, with Rees-Zammit even linked with a possible return to rugby.

Sources suggest, however, that – as it stands – there has been little indication from the Welshman that he is ready to ditch his NFL dream.

Rees-Zammit, who made a shock switch from rugby 12 months ago, spent the season on the practice squad with Jacksonville after being released by the Kansas City Chiefs in August.

He played in several preseason games for the back-to-back Super Bowl champions but failed to make a regular season appearance in the NFL.

Rees-Zammit is now a free agent but Mail Sport understands that the Jaguars have offered him a deal to return next season.

The Welshman, who has had a taste of life as a running back, a receiver, a kicker and a kick-returner, is still weighing up what to do next.

Rees-Zammit could see what interest emerges from other teams across the league, but free agent talks cannot start – at least technically – until after the end of the season.

The waters are muddied further by the fact that the Jaguars are on the lookout for a new head coach after Doug Pederson was fired following a miserable season. Pederson had told Rees-Zammit that his opportunity would come in Jacksonville.

‘We love his skill set, his talent, his speed, his physicality… he’s got great size. Just learn, just continue to learn, and just be patient, the opportunity will come,’ he said late last year.

‘Being on the practice squad, you never know, you are a play or two away from being elevated to the roster.’
