Mike Tomlin gives blunt response to swirling Steelers trade rumors

Seemingly everyone is trying to run Mike Tomlin out of town, and he predictably wants to hear none of it.

“I have no message. Save your time.” Tomlin told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette when asked about any teams potentially inquiring to trade for the Steeler coach.

Fans are understandably frustrated with the Steelers’ lack of late-season success.

Despite going 10-7 this year, they have not won a playoff game since 2016, losing in the Wild Card round of the playoffs four of the last five seasons.

“I understand the nature of what it is that we do, the attention and criticism that comes with it,” Tomlin said in response to the fan’s negative reactions. “I embrace it, to be honest with you. I enjoy the urgency that comes with what I do and what we do. I don’t make excuses for failure. I own it. But I also feel like I’m capable. As long as I’m afforded an opportunity to do that, I’ll continue. But I certainly understand [the fans’] frustrations. Probably more important than that, I share it.”

Although the Steelers have not had a losing record in his tenure, which began in 2005, other teams could be circling Tomlin as their next coach if Pittsburgh moves on.

Prior to Mike McCarthy being let go from the Cowboys, ex-Cowboys coach Jimmie Johnson had said he wanted the Cowboys to acquire Tomlin in a trade.

“I’ve got no inside information but things are stale in Pittsburgh. Things are stale in Dallas,” Johnson said Sunday. “And just, food for thought, how about a coaching swap. Mike McCarthy’s a Pittsburgh guy. Let him go to Pittsburgh, let Mike Tomlin go to Dallas, both franchises would be excited.”

Tomlin’s grip on the Steelers’ helm could be loosening, as he told reporters Tuesday that he didn’t know whether receiver George Pickens was late to the Christmas Day game against the Chiefs.

Tomlin had signed a three-year extension lasting through the 2027 season, and there is still no indication that owner Art Rooney II intends to move his longtime coach at this time.
