Steelers planning to keep Mike Tomlin despite disastrous end to season

Mike Tomlin likely isn’t going anywhere.

Despite the Steelers’ season ending in mᴀssive disappointment, losing to the Ravens on Saturday in the wild-card round after losing the last four games of the regular season, the team is not expected to fire or trade Tomlin, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Tomlin, the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL, signed a three-year extension before the season that would keep him with the team until the 2027 season.

Saturday’s loss — at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore — marked the Steelers’ sixth straight playoff defeat and the eighth time under Tomlin they’ve gone one-and-done in the postseason.

“I’m just ᴀssessing what transpired tonight,” Tomlin said after the loss. “Those are my bags, not [the team’s] bags. The journey that we were on certainly came to a disappointing end tonight.”

Tomlin, 52, took over for the 2007-08 season and owns a 183-107-2 overall record in the regular season across his 18 seasons in charge as well as an 8-11 record in the playoffs.

He notably led the team to a Super Bowl тιтle in 2008-09 and a Super Bowl appearance in 2010-11.

Despite his overall success, there have been calls among numerous NFL analysts for the Steelers to pursue a rare coach trade for Tomlin — including Fox’s Jim Johnson floating the idea of sending him to the Cowboys in exchange for Mike McCarthy.

While it appears Tomlin is set to stay, there is plenty of uncertainty regarding what the Steelers will do at quarterback with both Russell Wilson and Justin Fields set to be free agents.

Tomlin deflected when asked about the position on Saturday.

“I’m not ready to take a big-picture approach,” Tomlin said. “You know, I’m really ᴀssessing what happened today, and I’m certainly appreciative of the efforts tonight, but I can say that largely for the entire season. They’re two quality people, three quality people at the quarterback position, and really appreciate what they poured into this.”
