NFL ‘exploring huge shake-up to playoff format from next season’

NFL 'exploring huge shake-up to playoff format from next season'

The NFL is discussing a huge potential change to its playoff format from next season which would shake up the postseason like never before.

According to a bombshell report from CBS, league chiefs are planning to sit down after the Super Bowl to discuss the seeding situation, and who is given home-field advantage.

In the report, CBS claim that the league is considering giving the top four teams home games in the playoffs based on winning percentage.

As it stands, home-field advantage is automatically granted to each division winner, regardless of their regular-season record.

The current format was to the disadvantage of the 14-3 Vikings, who begin their postseason adventure on the road against the 10-7 Rams on Monday night.

Many believe the game should be held in Minnesota, but Sam Darnold and Co squandered the chance to win the NFC North by losing to the Lions on the final day of the regular season.

In doing so, they became the first 14-win team in NFL history to not win their division, while the Rams were able to secure the NFC West despite only winning 10 games.

Under the proposed new format, the Vikings would stay in Minnesota all the way to the Super Bowl.

At the end of the regular season, even rival players admitted they felt it was unfair for the Vikings to head out on the road after a 14-win season, with Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown speaking to reporters after their Week 18 win.

‘Obviously, if you win the division, you should obviously make a playoff spot, but having a 14-win team having to go on the road is kind of crazy,’ he said.

‘But I guess I don’t make the rules.’

Ultimately, the Vikings-Rams Wild Card game will not really be a home game for either team, after it was moved away from LA in the wake of the ongoing wildfires.

Instead, the Arizona Cardinals have temporarily loaned their stadium to the Rams, with the LA logo being painted on midfield ahead of the game.
