It appears the Patriots are closing in on bringing in Mike Vrabel.

According to the Boston Globe, the Patriots have entered contract negotiations with Vrabel, who has been looked at as the front-runner to fill their head coaching vacancy.

This came after NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Vrabel’s agent and the Patriots have had contract talks.

Ian Rapoport added that Vrabel is the “overwhelming favorite” for the job.

The Boston Sports Journal confirmed NFL Network’s report, adding: “money will matter.”

The former тιтans head coach interviewed with New England on Thursday and quickly rose as the favorite.

The Patriots also interviewed Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Friday after Buccaneers and Texans offensive coordinators Byron Leftwich and Pep Hamilton met with the team on Tuesday.

Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn denied their request for an interview.

Vrabel has emerged as one of the most sought-after coaching candidates this offseason, and he previously interviewed with the Jets and Bears after both teams ousted their respective coaches in the middle of last season.

Vrabel was most recently a member of the Browns’ staff as a coaching and personnel consultant after failing to land a head coaching job for the 2024 season.

Prior to his six-season head coaching tenure in Tennessee, Vrabel served as a linebackers coach and defensive coordinator during a three-year stint with the Texans.

Vrabel also has an extensive history with New England as a player, with the former linebacker spending eight seasons with the Patriots.

During his time in New England, Vrabel was a three-time Super Bowl champion and also was an All-Pro in 2007.

He was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2023.

If the two sides reach an agreement, Vrabel will take the place of outgoing Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, who went 4-13 in his first and only year with the team.

Mayo was fired on Jan. 5, less than two hours after the conclusion of New England’s final game of the season.
