In 1971, while working, workers in Changsha City, Hunan Province, unexpectedly discovered an ancient tomb. Accordingly, they informed the authorities and archaeologists. After receiving the report, experts went to the scene to inspect and learned that inside the ancient tomb was an extremely valuable “treasure”, the perfect mummy of a marquis’ wife in China.
Specifically, archaeologists were surprised by the large size of the tomb. Therefore, it took them more than a year with the help of more than 1,500 local volunteers to complete the excavation.
Accordingly, experts found more than 1,000 valuable artifacts inside the ancient tomb such as: gold and silver statues, a collection of silk dresses, cosmetics, musical instruments, lacquerware…

In particular, the archaeological team was extremely impressed when they found the perfect mummy of a woman buried with her husband and son. Based on the artifacts found in the tomb, they identified the woman as Lady Xin Zhui – the wife of Marquis Dai who lived during the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD).
Examination of the mummy showed that Lady Xin Zhui died in 163 BC at the age of 50. Although she breathed her last breath more than 2,000 years ago, her body was still quite intact with soft skin and no signs of muscle stiffness.
Mrs. Tan Truy’s arms and legs could still bend and stretch. Thanks to the perfect condition of the mummy, scientists determined that she had blood type A. They were also surprised that the internal organs in this mummy were intact.
Not only that, the perfect condition of the mummy also helped experts decipher the diet of Lady Tan Trui. When she was alive, she often enjoyed dishes reserved for the nobility such as venison, lamb and fruit.
With this diet, Mrs. Xin Zhui became obese and had to use a cane to walk. Her sedentary habits also caused arteriosclerosis, diabetes, and other spinal diseases. There were watermelon seeds left in Mrs. Xin Zhui’s stomach. This discovery showed that she had eaten watermelon 2 hours before she died of a heart attack.
The perfect integrity of the mummy of Lady Tan Truy made experts curious because the bodies of her husband and son were both decomposed even though they were buried in the same tomb.
Accordingly, scientists are trying to decipher the reason why Tan Truy Phu Nhan’s body has remained intact over time. Although they have spent a lot of time researching, they have yet to find an answer to this mystery.
