Anсient Goddeѕѕ Emergeѕ: 2,100-Yeаr-Old Cybele Stаtue Dіscovered іn Turkey

A Glimpse into Anatolia’s Past

In the northern Turkish province of Ordu, archaeologists have made a groundbreaking discovery that has captivated both scholars and history enthusiasts alike. A 2,100-year-old marble statue of Cybele, the revered Anatolian mother goddess, has been unearthed, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The Remarkable Find

Led by Prof. Dr. Süleyman Yücel Şenyurt from Gazi University, the excavation team uncovered the stunning artifact at the ancient Kurul Kalesi (Council Fortress) site. The statue, standing 110 centimeters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, is the first marble statue to be found in its original location in Turkey, making it an exceptionally rare discovery.

Cybele: The Mother Goddess

The statue depicts Cybele seated on her throne, her pregnant belly a symbol of fertility and nature’s abundance. This powerful representation of the Anatolian mother goddess provides a tangible connection to the beliefs and practices of ancient civilizations that once thrived in the region.

Unveiling History

A Fortress of Secrets

The Kurul Kalesi fortress, dating back 2,300 years, has proven to be a treasure trove of archaeological wonders. Prof. Şenyurt believes the statue remained intact after the fortress walls collapsed during a Roman invasion, further highlighting the historical significance of the site.

Future Plans

Recognizing the immense value of these discoveries, local authorities have pledged substantial funding to support ongoing excavations. Plans are underway to transform Kurul Kalesi into an open-air museum, allowing visitors to engage directly with the region’s remarkable history.

A Window to the Past

The discovery of the Cybele statue not only enriches our understanding of Anatolia’s ancient civilizations but also serves as a testament to the enduring cultural significance of this revered goddess. As excavations continue, archaeologists hope to uncover more treasures that will further illuminate the vibrant history of this fascinating corner of the world.
