Ex-Cowboys star Ezekiel Elliott signs for Super Bowl contender after being cut by Dallas and Jerry Jones

Running back Ezekiel Elliott is signing with the Los Angeles Chargers after getting cut by the Dallas Cowboys.

The Cowboys released the 29-year-old on New Year’s Eve before their Week 18 game against the Washington Commanders.

However, just a week after his release, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the AFC West powerhouse acquired Elliott ahead of their postseason push.

Rapoport reported that the Chargers are signing Elliot to their practice squad, adding that they ‘hope he gets up to speed quickly.’

In a statement about his release, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said they waived Elliott to allow him the playoff experience he wasn’t getting with Dallas.

‘Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster,’ Jones’ statement read.

‘As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.’

Dallas’ 7-10 season ended with a 23-19 loss to the Commanders, and they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

On the other hand, the Chargers finished with an 11-6 record and clinched the fifth seed in the AFC. They will face the Texans in a wild-card game on January 11.

Elliot returned to Dallas this season after a one-year stint with the New England Patriots. The Cowboys drafted him with the fourth overall pick in 2016, and he spent his first seven NFL seasons there.

The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time rushing champion ran for 266 yards and three touchdowns on 74 carries this season.

Elliot will head into the postseason for the fifth time in his career, hoping to be elevated to the Chargers’ active roster.
