We traveled 1,000 miles to see our favorite NFL player… then the unthinkable happened

Social media users were caught in an impᴀsse after a family of Eagles fans traveled far and wide for their season finale against the New York Giants.

Hours before Sunday’s highly-awaited matchup, NFLonFox’s X account posted a snap of a family holding up a sign expressing their excitement to see Saquon Barkley break the single-season rushing record.

‘Traveled 1000 miles to see Saquon break the record,’ the sign read.

The account parlayed the pH๏τo with a SpongeBob SquarePants meme, reading, ‘How do we tell him?’

Barkley spent the first six seasons with the Giants, where he rushed for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns.

However, he infamously joined their rival Eagles this offseason and had a career-defining season in the City of Brotherly Love.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, Barkley has rushed for 2,005 yards. On top of his yards, Barkley rushed for 13 touchdowns and received two this season.

While 101 yards away from breaking Eric Dickerson’s record, the Eagles decided to rest Barkley and put hopes of breaking the record to bed. Although the news of Barkley skipping the game was reported earlier in the week, the family seemingly missed the headlines as they planned their trip to East Rutherford.

‘Oh no they didn’t watch any football news this week or what?’ one user commented on the post.

‘Damn and they still have to travel 1000 miles back,’ a second reacted.

A third user suggested that the family ‘should’ve downloaded a sports app respectfully.’

Other users alluded to how the sign could have been a sarcastic joke rather than a product of misinformation.

Nonetheless, the Eagles secured the 20-13 win to finish their season with a 14-3 record. Quarterback Tanner McKee led the way for Philadelphia with 27 completions for 269 yards and two touchdowns.

The Eagles secured the second seed in the NFC playoffs and will host the Green Bay Packers in a wildcard game.
