ESPN host accused of being ‘biased’ towards Georgia ahead of Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame

ESPN host accused of being 'biased' towards Georgia ahead of Sugar Bowl against Notre Dame

An ESPN anchor is receiving criticism online for showing her fandom ahead of a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup on Thursday afternoon.

Elle Duncan, a native of Atlanta, was seen on SportsCenter interviewing a reporter on the ground at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans – site of Thursday’s Allstate Sugar Bowl.

The game featured a matchup between the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs and the No. 7 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Duncan, an avid Georgia football fan, was on-air wearing a red-and-black jacket (UGA’s colors) with a number of patches showing her Bulldogs’ fandom.

It’s important to note that this was long before the actual broadcast for the CFP pregame show began and that Duncan hosted that show in a different outfit.

But that didn’t stop some Notre Dame fans from complaining about the network – which just began broadcasting SEC football games (the conference Georgia plays in) this year.

One Notre Dame fan account posted, ‘I present to you an unbiased sports news channel…’

‘ESPN being real subtle,’ read a response to that post. Another person said, ‘That’s an embarrᴀssment. Hopefully, Notre Dame holds on in this game.’

But plenty of others were defending Duncan – saying that she’s allowed to show her fandom, that she wasn’t calling the game, and that it makes sense given where she’s from.

‘Elle Duncan an Atlanta [born] person and has always rooted for Atlanta teams. Give me an honest Homer over most [of] the others pretending unbias,’ wrote one user in response to the complaint.

Another response said, ‘We do not bad mouth @elleduncanESPN in this world. She is Georgia through and through, I appreciate her fandom.’

‘I’m not a fan of Elle Duncan but she has always been very vocal about her Georgia fandom so it’s no big deal at least she open about it it’s like the Golics and Notre Dame!,’ another commentator said – referring to longtime ESPN radio host Mike Golic and his son, Mike Golic Jr. who both played football for the Fighting Irish.

Unfortunately for Duncan, her Bulldogs weren’t able to pull out a win as they fell to Notre Dame 23-10.

The Fighting Irish now move on to the Orange Bowl to take on No. 6 Penn State.
