San Francisco 49ers owner makes decision on future of head coach Kyle Shanahan amid awful season

One year after coming three points short of a championship in Super Bowl LVIII, the San Francisco 49ers aren’t returning to the playoffs and will own a losing record.

But change will not be coming to the coaching staff or executive level – at least, not at the top of the food chain.

Speaking to the San Francisco Standard, 49ers owner Jed York says that both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will return to the team for the 2025 season.

‘You can write that for sure,’ York told the Standard before the Niners’ game against the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. ‘They’re not going anywhere.’

That response came after the Standard asked about rumors suggesting that other teams might put together a potential trade for Shanahan.

While York admitted to the outlet that the team wasn’t happy about their current predicament, the owner doesn’t believe that cleaning house would help the team’s future.

Shanahan swatted aside any idea of a trade earlier in December when he said, ‘I don’t want to be any place in the world more than here.’

Lynch uttered similar wishes for Shanahan to stay back on December 8: ‘I’ve found the whole discussion on Kyle and some of the stuff rather comical,’ Lynch told San Francisco radio station KNBR. ‘We have won four of the last five division championships. We’ve been in two Super Bowls.

‘The standard here is to win championships, and we’ve fallen short of that, but we have an excellent head coach. And the fact people are talking about stuff like that, I do find it comical.’

After entering the season with hopes of returning to the mountaintop of the NFL world, the 49ers fell woefully short of expectations. They currently own a 6-10 record having lost seven of their last eight games, including on Monday night.

A lot of that is owed to injuries. At the time of publishing, 21 players on the 49ers are listed on the team’s injury report.

That includes key starters on injured reserve – including pᴀss rusher Javon Hargrave, guard Jon Feliciano, running back Christian McCaffrey, guard Ben Bartch, and offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Going into the final week of the season, both quarterback Brock Purdy and cornerback Charvarius Ward have been listed as questionable while linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been ruled out.
